Never heard of such-a-thing............Except for this........

Quote:
This means that poolees, in a true national emergency, could be “mobilized” as a national asset of untrained manpower, and sent through whatever training was necessary and required, even if the training was abbreviated. The USMC pulled poolees, even straight civilian volunteers, right through the most abbreviated training courses at the start of the Korean War, when the USMC was desperate for warm bodies to throw at Korea…some of them never did attend any form of boot camp…just crash courses within their units from the older Marines, most of whom had served in WWII.

In Helmet for My Pillow, his World War II memoir, journalist Robert Leckie wrote of Marine Corps Recruit Training:

It is a process of surrender. At every turn, at every hour, it seemed, a habit or a preference had to be given up, an adjustment had to be made. Even in the mess hall we learned that nothing mattered so little as a man's own likes or dislikes ... Worst in this process of surrender was the ruthless refusal to permit a man the slightest privacy.

Am I missing something here? I thought maybe Christine Blasey Ford hijacked fhoenix's account, but some of them are right, so that can't be it. [biggrin]

I did him a favor and bailed, I think there are too many players for him to keep up with, math is difficult.  [While my handle is still in the counting I can opine]

You would usually do a point spread pick once or twice a year but you would announce it when you did it

Right - I thought this was still straight up win/lose.

When I saw the spread, I didn't initially snap that it was in play. But that took only one weekend. Truth be told, outside of one or two teams, most people have no idea of how college teams are going to compare to the prior season. There are Seniors graduating, red shirt players moving into positions that would have normally gone to a backup. The first week or two are a crap shoot for sure. I like playing the spread, but in the first one to three weeks, many fans are betting money on blind faith, and odds makers are simply moving lines around to keep the money from getting lopsided on the books. The spread makes you do your due diligence and check out the injury and scouting reports. Anybody can pick favored teams without the spread. Alabama not covering, and Tech outright winning as an underdog makes it much more interesting IMHO.
