Arioto also homered. Moore started and was relieved by Traina. Japan is now 3-2. Ueno will not pitch in this tournament. Japan started a 19 year old who showed a lot of promise. Stewart played a nice second base for USA. I can't remember USA run ruling Japan before. Have they?

Japan is using the world cup to get experience for younger players before the world championships next month. Australia is prepping for it and skipped world cup....they play japan in japan and then Italy in Italy before they land in Netherlands for world championships. That 16 team event is the signature one every 2 years. I am excited to see the usa and Canada girls play outside of north America and see Russia, Italy, great Britain and other play that we only see once every 2 years. A great tourney with several competitive teams helps softball for Tokyo Olympics (that and japan being competitive...lol)

Interesting that Nevins is clearly pitching 'illegally' by American collegiate rules. The commentators even stated that pointing out the more 'liberal' international rules. My view is the international rule is what should be adopted by the NCAA. I suspect Frank agrees

NC Exile - You suspect correctly! What a delight to watch an entire game without 20 marginal illegal pitch calls.

USA 1 and Mexico 0 in the third, but I am really impressed with Pinon, the pitcher for Mexico.

How are American's able to play for different countries. Just a question, I think its great that they can find some other national team to play with, if they can't make the USA team. I know that Pinon, Taukeihao, and Garcia all play(ed) for college teams. Now I'm not sure if they are from Mexico or just their family is. Does anyone know how far back you can go in your families history to make another country's national team?

Realize many players come to usa for college softball and we see them play; yet they were still citizens of their home country. Some p[lay for the team where they were born, or their parents are citizens. Others play for a country where they league play in after becoming a naturalized citizen .Becky Hammon (Born and raised in south Dakota and college at Colorado state) played for Russia national team in 2008 and 2012 Olympics this way. She played in Russian leagues as well as WNBA before 2008, was publically upset she got left off the 21 person team usa invite list to try out for team, and asked Russia if she could play for them and they naturalized her so she could. There are several male and female athletes that can compete for America (because they went to college in USA and live in USA) but can play for another country because they were born there and their parents still live there. Nastia Liukin (American Olympian with many medals of all colors) was born in Russia but grew up in texas when her family left after soviet union broke up. We saw Danielle Lawrie win WCWS with Washington and jen Yee play for Georgia tech.....both are Canadians playing for their home country. Same now with girls from mexico. Either they were born there or parents were born in mexico. In Tucson paers and news all the time for past 2 years Estela Piñon has spoken of her Mexican descent. Even mentioned when she was drafted in NPF by bandits. When USA dream team for basketball played they crushed teams and you could count on one hand the number of foreign born nba players on other teams. Now the NBA champion spurs have mnore players who played in past Olympics for different nations than played in Olympics in 1988--- including parker and diaw for france, and ginobli for argentina (who has dual citizenship...but it is Italy and argentina and he could play for either). There are 20 times more foreign born players in NBA than in 1988. This is going to happen in softball too. Come here for college and play then play for their home country in international play. As fans we will be able to see teams from around the world play and recognize 2 or 3 players on their team from seeing them play in college (like we do with Canada already).

Sara Nevins is the most underrated pitcher in the USA. She is only 22 years of age and will get even better. She is special.

USA wins World Cup over Canada 5-2. Sara Nevins pitches very well. Infield needs work.

Frank: Sara is special, but her elbow and lack of passion for the game will end her career sooner than people think.

The biggest issue in the infield is at shortstop. I think Fox is the best bet there, though. No disrespect to Fischer.

Could be. But this year she's the best on the USA team.

Out of the zone - I am ignorant about Sara's elbow. Please educate me, and how do you know that she lacks passion for the game? You might be absolutely correct - I simply don't know about either situation. If she has elbow trouble, that would explain why Coach Eriksen is limiting her innings.

Proud of the team. Why are several people unimpressed? Because we were spoiled by dominant lights-out pitchers of the Olympic team usa years. Team usa can use it's 4th and 5th best squad and still win. We proved that the last few years...difference is we can be beat and THAT is good for softball to come back to Olympics. We can be beat and aren't dominant. Canada left a buttload of runners on base all game--we aren't used to that. We are not used to seeing team usa have to beat mexico 3-2 in the 7th. These games feel like watching wcws games not like in the past where it was like watching florida university play St. Joseph High school. I like watching competitive games where my team is best but not so much better it is like watching Rhonda rousey fight miley cyrus. As I said 2 years ago and last year----team usa can win without the superstars playing in NPF. We crank out top notch players each year in college softball (some play on other international teams like mexico and Canada). I like cheering these young ladies. Go Team USA.

Frank: Sara has had some Ulnar nerve issues for the last year or so. She wore a sleeve most of the year to pad her elbow if it banged into her hip. There were times this year that she couldn't feel her fingers, lots of numbness and tinggeling(sp). As for the the passion for the game. What I mean by that, is Sara doesn't eat, sleep, and breathe softball. She looks forward to the day of becoming a wife and mother. How long she continues to push her body and put her personal life on hold is anyones guess.

Out of the zone - Thank you for the explanation. I was basically a rise ball pitcher, and one morning I woke up with my entire right arm numb. This was long after I had retired from pitching. We thought I was having a heart attack, but after I was taken to the hospital, it was diagnosed as an ulnar nerve problem. I was given the choice of an operation or leaving it as is. Even today at 82, on my right hand my small finger and the one next to it are numb and I have some difficulty grasping. If Sara has ulnar nerve problems, she ultimately will lose feeling in her pitching hand and will have the same choice to make. It's a matter of time. Too bad. As for her family aspirations, that too is understandable. I wish her well. She will have great softball memories. I am pleased that she has had the opportunity to rise to the elite level of women's softball and shine there. Her magnificent career at USF speaks for itself through the numbers and accolades. Bon voyage, Sara, and thank you from a fan !!
