Monday Night Championship Game

Team Japan over Team USA 7 - 0 (5 innings)

Team Japan wins the 2014 Canadian Open Fastpitch Women's International Championship

Team Japan got 2 runs in top of the first off of Henderson and 4 more off of her in the top of the 5th to cruise to victory.
Yamane got the win for Japan. 4.2 innings, 4 hits, 1 walk, 5 strike outs.
Ozaki came in to face Lauren Gibson with Moultrie at 3rd and Chavanne at 2nd. She got Gibson to fly out and then Yamane came back in to get Arioto to fly out. Ozaki faced just 1 batter.

Henderson got the loss. Pitched 4.1 innings, 5 hits, 6 runs, 4 walks, 3 strike outs.
Moore pitched 0.1 inning and gave up 3 hits, 1 run, and 1 strike out. She gave up a 2-run double that scored Henderson's runners and a scoring single for the run she gave up. She couldn't get the last out in the 5th and Traina came in to get the last out (fielders choice ground out).

Henderson got both losses to Japan.
Traina got the loss to Canada.
Team USA went 1-3 vs Japan and Canada.

Coach Erikson is the King of Silver.  Is it to late to fly Walton in for the next tournament?  Would love to hear the spin that the USA braintrust is putting on this tourney.  Lets see, my guess is "Sara Nevins had some back issues and we couldn't throw her in the big game".  1-3 vs Canada and Japan.  My how we have fallen.

Maybe, just maybe, the USA team considers this an unimportant tournament and doesn't want to show Nevins to the Japanese until the World Championships.  It's a strategy that the Japanese have used many times.  This is a tournament that gets no press, no television and charges a lot of money to see it streamed.  I'd guess that outside those in attendance there aren't many that know about or care about this tournament.   I know that we're used to win-them-all-at-all-cost but sometimes there's a strategy that means otherwise.  I'm not saying that this is the strategy being used, it could be just as you say: it's a crappy team.  If the USA team were an NPF team they might come in third or fourth in the league.

Fujita got the 9-2 win vs USA in round robin.
Yamane got the 7-0 win vs USA in championship game.
Ozaki pitched to Lauren gibson with runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1 out and got her to pop out. Her only batter faced.
Ueno is recovering from injury and waiting for worlds.

Ja[pan did not care about World cup in USA. They flew in and played the first day. Within 10 days japan had lost to cnada, USA, and chinese taipei. According to ESPN Women magazine they were getting acclimated at world cup and were set by the start of canada open (this report was before any game was played in canada open but after world cup was over). The article went on to say how japan doesn't care about world cup or canada open--it is all about worlds.

Australia and Netherlands have stated they are preparing for worlds and do not care about World cup in USA or Canada cup. Australia is playing in japan this week then against japan again right before worlds.

Teams care about winning in front of their home crowd...otherwise they are playing hard but keeping something in reserve for worlds. Jennifer Gilbert is playing in worlds for team canada but not taking time off from Akron Racers to play world cup or canada open.

Team USA pitching is solid but not lights out (which we are spoiled from seeing in the past from Team USA).
Nevins is the ace (and only lefty)...Henderson and moore did well against both teams that went 1-5 ieach n world cup and they were good against the bottom feeders in Canada open. Traina was derailed both tourneys.
Nevins had to pitch against team canada the game before japan because they had 6 lefties in lineup. Don't beat canada you don't go to championship against japan so they had to make sure they won against a canada team that had beaten them in playoffs already and sent them to losers bracket path.

Sam Fisher (who I lose my voice cheering for) in Canada open feasted on junior college and softball club pitching in round robin. In 5 playoff games she batted .154.
Arioto had 5 homeruns in world cup and 5 in canada open. She won't see many good pitches in world as she is labelled as the best power hitter in international softball this summer. Playing outside of north america will be different for our girls too. It won't be in canada or usa in fromt of friendlies--it will be across the globe. 2016 is in canada and we are getting our plans to attend it set.

fhoenix - Team USA has some daunting schedule ahead.  It winds up in Amsterdam where outstanding world competition will be waiting to knock off the USA and Japan.

Team USA is now 3-0 in the World Tournament in Amsterdam.  They are ahead of Australia 4-0 in the fourth.
They previously won the tournament they entered in Italy before departing for the Nederlands.
