To put it mildly, Jackie Traina is not pitching well.  I wonder why.   Her pitches seem to lack the movement that I saw when she pitched for Bama.  Different ball weight? lower seams??

fhoenix - Thank you very much for posting the results.  [wave]  Sara Nevins is obviously the ace of USA's pitching staff and is now receiving the national and international respect that she so richly deserves.  Her career at USF was fantastic.

fhoenix - So Fisher is on fire, and Arioto continues to amaze.  Traina had her best outing thus far in her four inning stint.  Again, thank you for your reports. Who pitched for NJCAA and what do those letters mean?  It looks as though Coach Eriksen is still giving all his players an opportunity to shine.   [wave]

NJCAA= National Junior college athletic Association
NJCAA all-stars are 16 players from junior college teams who all have at least a 2.5 gpa and are sophmores (meaning they will be graduating and moving on to other colleges). Basically they are all 18-20 years old.
Same for JJCAA mens all-star teams.
From School like Indian River state (florida), Wallace state (Alabama), Kirkwood community college(iowa), Butler (Kansas), and North Idaho, LSU Eunice, Frank Phillips (Texas), Mississippi gulf coast, etc.

Shyanne Saladino pitched all 7 innings against TEAM USA. She gave up 9 hits, 1 walk, 4 ER, and lost 4-3.
She pitches for Kirkwood community college. She had 25 wins, 200 k, and a 1.28 era in her soph year
She is headed to Missouri Western State University.

Traina's best outing was 4 innings, 2 hit, 2 walk, 2 ER, no decision against the junior college/community college all-star team. She got pulled in the 5th after giving up a lead off walk (0-2 count and next 4 pitches were balls). Henderson replaced her and gave up a walk and a hit that scored the run and took traina from winning to no decision and USA took lead next inning and held on to give her the win.

Basque county is an area of northern Spain (Same population as the city of Houston or the state of new mexico--2.1 million).
They are an all-star team from a softball league that plays in Basque Country region of northern spain.
Couldn't find much info on them.

Bloomington Lady Hearts are a softball club from Illinois--they were formed in 1986.
From Illinois softball-----

The lady Hearts have been the opponent of Canada, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Italy, Venezuela, Cuba, Mexico, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Taipei, the Philippines, China, Argentina, Sweden and, of course, the USA National Women's Softball Teams. The US Olympic Women's Softball Team has participated in four Olympics and the Lady Hearts are one or only two teams that have played against the US National squad in preparation for all four Olympic Tournaments.

2000 Olympic Gold medallist Christy Ambrosi played for the Lady Hearts in 1998. And 2 time Gold medallist Michele Smith has been here 3 different times to lead youth clinics sponsored by the Lady Hearts. Michele was also one of the ESPN announcers for the 2008 Hearts-USA game.

................................................

From Bloomington Pantagraph----

"The Lady Hearts are known, not only for their softball talent and success, but for several items they stand for: sportsmanship, friendliness with the fans, the opposing teams and the umpires and hard but fair play. They make the game fun. Many of the youth players from the area attend Lady Hearts games so being a good role model to the kids is important to them. As one reporter put it, 'The Lady Hearts will make you proud'."

Michelle smith said-----

"During my career I had the pleasure to complete against many great teams. When I make a statement like that most people think I am referring to the skills and abilities on the team on the field and the Lady Hearts were one of those talented teams. But when I use the wording 'great team' I am talking about the people and the character of the organization. The Lady Hearts are a class act from top to bottom."

fhoenix - My son in law is Basque and the car I drive is Basque Red.   LOL  The Basque language is unique and can be traced to no particular etymological root.  Basques are noted for short, strong legs and really big upper bodies (those Pyrenees Mountains I suspect).  In general they are not fond of Spain.

Infield defense really hurt Team USA tonight. Error in the first directly led to 2 runs. In the 5th at least one if not 2 of the "hits" should have been errors. That doesn't excuse the walk or double though. Not often you see Gibson drop a throw to first on a bunt, which was a scored a hit due to home town scoring. A similar play when USA was hitting was scored an error.
