Stop the verbal madness, these kids are sophmores.........they have 3 more high school seasons and travel ball seasons before they start the journey to college......  just my opinion.

And a reasonable one.  Though from my perspective, it just isn't that big of a problem.

What was there in the entire country last year - maybe 15 sophomore kids verballing?

Compare that to the number of girls in golf, ice skating, tennis, and gymnastics who go to live at some academy for 50 weeks a year, beginning at a younger aghe than this.  At least 10X as many in each of those sports.

At least the softball kids are living at home, going about a completely normal life.  With the exception that they no longer have the pressure faced by many of their peers in regards to college choice.

Things would probably be better without it, but it is a personal decision.  And not as common as it is perceived to be.

Regards,

Scott

Scott,
last year might have been 15 but if you look at the last three days of Spy's update there are about 10 listed with 6 from one travel team.
I agree with your point about other sports too.  Eventually Softball committments will be like they are in football,  Nothing is done til you sign on the line. Then, No more need for committed bands at exposure tournaments

Speaking of which, this is the day for football NLIs, right?

Actually, I'm not sure SB is any different NOW.  Nothing IS done until you sign on the bottom line.

Best regards,

Scott

Let's hope softball does not become like football.  Today I read that over 156 young men had de-committed and that of 156, at least 15 had de-committed twice.

happyfeet - Unfortunately, we live in a world that seems to think that if a person doesn't do anything illegal, his/her actions are acceptable. I am aware that these young people, especially the very talented ones, are bombarded with recruiting methods, but their word, in ethical theory, should be their bond, and in this day of early verbal commitment, young folks are torn by their early commitment as opposed to other potential situations which occur after their commitment. It creates a catch 22.

I hate the whole coaches continuing hard after a kid after hes committed (maybe i'm just bitter--AZ has lost many football commits in the last couple years) is ridiculous. But they all do it so..

I don't have an issue with the de-commitment. We have barely 16 year olds getting the squeeze from every level. Teams outside the top 100 are forcing commitments one year before the athletes early signing period. The fear, and the reality, that the"money may be gone" forces kids to play their hand far too early.

Some of these athletes don't even know how good they are or will be. Don't tell me it is easy to transfer. I have seen far to many train wrecks.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but are these high school sophomores offered scholarships?

Yes they are, and now freshmen are being offered also.

Theres a sophomore pitcher- probably the 2nd best pitcher in the state of Arizona- who has already been offered by many top teams. She is a top priority for Arizona State and has already taken a few unofficials. But (smartly) she has not commited as of yet, although she is 90% sure where to go but she'd decided she wants to wait to commit. I think that is much better choice- wait until you get farther down the road-scholies will still be available! just be patient! I think thats the way to do it!  Two years is a long way down the road and something might come up! Why not just enjoy the experience?!!

She's legit.
Clint Meyers is after this young pitcher HARD. As are both Mike Candrea and the UCLA coaching staff.
She has almost for sure decided.
Not sure that she has publicly announced it though.
One teams fans are going to be blessed with watching this young pitcher.

She is #2 only to Kenzie Fowler. Considered the best high school pitcher in America.

Slam - these scholarship offers would have to be provisional, correct?  I mean, what if the girl doesn't qualify through the NCAA clearinghouse?  Also, the NCAA clearinghouse qualifications are minimal.  Many universities want higher stats than the NCAA requires.  What if her grades, ACT scores and/or class rank are not high enough for admission to her "chosen" school?

Hard to imagine Ms. Escobedo going to UA with Fowler already committed.  I think it would be much more interesting to see them face off as part of the UA/ASU rivalry.  I hope she stays close to home...hate to see her in baby blue.

Langenfeld graduates in Escobedos senior year so no worries about that. Haven't heard much about Rodino. Escobedo and Kerr would make a great tandem albeit for just one year.
At ASU, she could come and start as the #1 immediately. She would instantly make them a top team.
At Arizona she and Kenzie would make a dynamic duo, one better then any in the country. For 3 years they would play together. And in dallas's freshman year, Lindsey Sisk will be a senior. That would be quite a triple threat. Escobedo is close friends with Wildcat commit Becca Tikey as well.
I'm thinking her commitment is very solid but she has a few years to decide for sure- she's not even old enough to go on officials yet!!!

2010 pitchers already?? Has it already been decided who the top pitchers are in this class. The only pitcher I've heard about is D Escobedo and L Klopp, are there others?

Yes, we in Wildcat country heard about the Dallas E., father's decision.
We are encourage with Dallas E. comments that she always wanted to be a Cat.
As the previous post suggest, the verbals are not binding.

Some key items which may of influenced the current decision:
a.  Coach MC was not coaching the team. Instead, he was coaching the Softball Olympic team. And ASU emphasis the current Cat record (losses beyond the typical-norm.).
b.  The current ASU performance against the Cats was favorable for ASU.
However, if ASU does not win the CWS. Then, the ASU season would be
a great disappointment. With success comes high expectations.
     Yes, this is the reality.

The key items which will impact Dallas E. FINAL college choice (LOI) will be:
1.  She will mature and determine if she wants to follow her childhood dream.
2.  ASU team will be greatly impacted next year. Dallas will obtain a good sense of ASU reality. She should expect similar results her FR and SO years, at ASU.
3. UA performance next year as well as Coach MC influence.

I would be great to have Sisk,Fowler and Dallas E.

I also acknowledge the advantage of having her parents attend her home games, in Phoenix.

And hence, my overwhelming concern with the 'verbal' system.

It's a commitment, until I decide it's not a commitment, and then I really didn't mean it to be binding, just kind of a fun idea...yaknow?

Come on, are adults really placing their lives and careers in the hands of the whims of 17 year old girls, or even worse, their fickle parents?

Yea 'Dad' they are...what power!

PS. Look what's happened to Wildcat Akamine, overshadowed by Sisk, so what would happen to Dallas there?

Hey, there are ASU softball fan after all. hahaha
Good season so far.

Yes, I will be waiting one year for item 5 - acceptance.
When the LOI is signed;until then, the Dallas E decision remains "SOFT".

In regards to Sarah A.: She has made it know that she prefer to play a field position.  We would of preferred to have her pitch. As evident in her pitching performance against UCLA. Sarah has also commented on how she "does not" have a pitchers mentality.

The addition of Dallas to the CATS would surely secure at least TWO National Champions. Imagine: Sisk,Fowler and Dallas E.
WOW- go Cats.

Note:
The good thing about having so much time before signing LOI is the following:
a.  ASU looses two key senior ,after this year.
b.  ASU Senior Pitcher is GONE.
c.  ASU performance will surely go DOWN.
This performance will be representative of what Dallas should expect at ASU. So, does she want this? NO.
d.  She matures and so her father's influence maybe less important.
e.  I am sure Coach M feels that some things happen while he was away.
So, follow up seem only appropriate.
I am sure there are other inputs......

ASUSoftballFan-
Just so you know, JessieWildcat is not a representative of us AZ fans. We got over the Escobedo deal the next week. Time to move on. It would've been amazing (albeit SELFISH!) of us to get both Kenzie and Dallas. Again, as i have said before in a previous post, it was well known that Dallas wanted to come to Arizona. Even you as an ASU fan have to see that. But a top pitcher wanting to be second fiddle? can't imagine it. Can't imagine Dallas switching her commitment either. One coach actually said "Kenzie Fowler is number one and it isn't even close. Anyone else is a distant second." I know both Kenzie Fowler and Dallas Escobedo and have seen both of them pitch and i would take Kenzie Fowler any time, any day any game over any current high school pitcher. Like you say-- GAME ON.

AZ will have a pretty amazing lineup with this years frosh class, Koria, Arriola, Buchanan, Kirker, DelPonte, Tikey, etc. etc.

Both teams will be GOOD.

Isn't Kirker a junior?  I believe she is.  Even still, a great freshman class for Arizona.

ASU gets Dallas Escobedo and Arizona gets Kenzie Fowler.  Can't wait until 2010 to see how both teams will turn out.  Right now I'm not going to lose sleep over Dallas' decision to attend ASU.  Both schools are excellent schools to play softball at!  Best of luck to ASU and the Wildcats in the post season.

Yes, I know that.  He's new and exuberant.  There are lots of great AZ fans here, you, BearDown, Courtney26, 123, Catfan, AZSBDad, Centerfield among others.

I didn't see that at all.  What I saw was a great pitcher that was being courted by Arizona, UCLA and Arizona State and took the time to do her homework and make an informed decision.

You know what they say about opinions.

Have seen them both, as recently as Wednesday night.  I'm glad you are happy with Kenzie.  I'm real good with Dallas, Sam Parlach and Mac Popescue.
Like you say-- GAME ON.  That's what makes it fun.
AZ will have a pretty amazing lineup with this years frosh class, Koria, Arriola, Buchanan, Kirker, DelPonte, Tikey, etc. etc.  Great class.  I've enjoyed watching Buchanan, Delponte and Tikey over the years for Thunder, Killer Bees, this year Hotshots and in HS.  PD says good things about Koria from the Firecrackers.

Both teams will be GOOD.  It's a great rivalry.
Good luck in the post season.  I'll root for you until you play ASU, and then it's
GO Devils.

Just checked the newspaper online - congrats to Kenzie on winning the 4A1 state championship and congrats to Sam Parlach on winning the state 5A1 championship.

Classy posts
i am excited about the future of the uofa program from our 08 class to the 09s led by kenzie and bailie kirker. heard delponte is quite the prospect as well and tikey is considered one of arizonas best. my guess is coach candrea will wait and recruit a '10 pitcher since sisk will be a senior in kenzies freshman year. will we see the younger fowler join her sister at ua? hmm.!! heard nothing but terrific things about the younger fowler as well.

and i will echo the congrats sentiments even though she beat sahuaro!
