Are college softball coaches braindead? Why do they coach their players to let the other team take 2nd unchallenged (even when the player slows down between the bases, and even with 0 outs) when the player on 3rd is going to score 95% of the time anyway? They are giving you a free out, take it.

I don't get it.

I will say this, like some kids hopping off third base on a fly ball to the outfield with fewer than two outs, despite how incessantly you drill them to be nailed to the bag, it is amazing how many middle infielders get fixated on the pyrite (the runner between first and second) and ignore the gold (the runner at third).

Any player worth her salt there would pantomime being intent on that trailing runner, with the idea of luring the lead runner off third base....and then nail HER. Fish in a freaking barrel.

I don't get it.

The fielders do fake and try various tricks (throwing to third on the play, throwing to the cutoff between home and 2nd) - the runners have obviously practiced this a lot, they rarely get caught off guard.

The not tagging thing sucks too, but that is pretty rare ime (anything more than never is too much though).

No, I do not see full commitment by the MI to act (merely act) like they are fixated with the runner at first.

Properly done, that lead runner reaches that distance off third where the middie peels off the trailing runner and runs at the runner off third and ideally makes one throw, back to the third-base bag to get that out.

I don't see that technique at all out there

Most top coaches that don't use a play here have been bitten in the past. I talked to Bill Edwards, at length one time, about this. He said he had lost more games than he had won, by a large margin, trying to run a play. It requires a lot of practice and is not nearly as easy to pull off as you intimate. I put plays in, over the objections(more like suggestions) from my managers, because I think it is our job to prepare the players for college and 1&3 plays make them think on their feet. If I was purely doing it as the best tactic, I might not be so adamant about it. There are visual distractions and at least 2 accurate throws necessary before a rundown can be achieved at third. Even the rundown is no guarantee. Much can go wrong.

I guess I should have clarified.... at the elite level, those two throws should be second nature.

I could see a mid-major team who doesn't grab middies from a Gold Coast Hurricanes or the like being reticent.

But giving away a kid getting to second (UNLESS you are talking about end-game scenario where ONLY the runner at 3B counts) shouldn't happen among teams skilled enough to reach the Sweet 16.
